It's Time to Review Your Canoe and Kayak Goals

Who can believe it's already July? The year is half over and we're smack dab in the middle of the paddling season. Back in a January blog post I challenged all of you to set some paddling goals for 2009.

Well, its time to review those goals now. Of course, we should always be reviewing our goals all throughout the year but the halfway mark should be particularly significant.

So how are they coming along? Have you learned that new stroke you were practicing? Are you getting in as many paddling days as you had planned? How about that overnight canoe trip you were planning, did it happen?

It's not too late to turn all of your canoeing and kayaking dreams for this year into a reality. And if you haven't set any canoe or kayak goals it's not too late. Set some now and begin to live them out!

May all your paddling dreams come true!

While you're out paddling this weekend, take a moment to remember what it took our great nation, and the men and women before us, to secure our liberties.

4th of July Paddling: Safety First!

I hope the 4th of July falling over the weekend didn't mess up the potential for an extra day off from work for any of you. I know I'll be enjoying a 3 day weekend of paddling...um...I mean with the family (of course there will be paddling).

If your plans, like mine, include some water sports, be sure to remember to put safety first. This weekend, along with Memorial Day Weekend, is one of the biggest boating weekends of the year. That includes not only non-motorized boats like canoes and kayaks but also wave runners and motor boats.

Just like motorcycles have to watch out for cars on the road, we paddlers need to steer clear of these motorized menaces. No offense to anyone out there!

Also be sure to Dress for Water Safety. Most people think that only includes wearing pfds. Well, this also means wearing sunblock as well as a host of other items.

If you haven't planned your weekend paddling out yet, you'd better get on it. There's only one day to go. And of course, have fun out there!
